Chinese Language

Language is closely related to our daily lives, and is the bridge of communication. Therefore, our school strives to nurture students' interest in language learning, to help them cultivate good learning attitudes and habits, to enhance their language, thinking, aesthetic and self-directed learning skills, as well as to enrich their knowledge of Chinese culture and to develop their affection towards their nationality.

With the focus on reading, our curriculum integrates the teaching of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

  • To make reading a key focus, and to teach listening and speaking skills ahead of writing skills.
  • To implement "Speak and Write" approach for lower grades and "Read and Write" integration approach for upper grades.
  • To help students master thinking skills at different levels through reading strategies from the text-based teaching.
  • To help students accumulate specification language, and to develop language sense.
  • To strengthen students' understanding and knowledge accumulation of Chinese literature, culture and history, as well as to cultivate their self-directed learning skills by encouraging extensive reading through self-learning texts and e-learning platforms such as "Reading Garden" and "Fireflies e-Reading Scheme".
  • To enable students to experience the beauty of language, to develop aesthetic skills and to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture through teaching classical poems and texts to all grades.

In order to motivate students to be proactive and to actively participate in class, to stimulate their interest in learning, as well as to encourage them to make use of e-learning platforms for independent learning, our teachers utilise tablet computers for learning/teaching in the classroom according to their learning abilities.

We break away from the traditional teaching method and let our students experience life-wide learning. Collaborating with General Studies, the cross-curricular learning activities lead students out of the classroom to visit historical sites and heritage trails, so as to develop their spirit for enquiry and to enhance their understanding of Chinese heritage.

Through participation in a wide range of activities, including the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival, co-curricular activities, Chinese culture competition, story sharing in morning assemblies, drama performance and other language-related events, we intend to stimulate students' learning interest and enhance their language proficiency.

Having admitted a number of non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students, we develop a school-based Chinese Language curriculum and implement group learning for them, so as to cater for their learning abilities and to help them learn Chinese more effectively. Furthermore, in order to increase the reading amount in Chinese of the NCS students, we organise Reading Buddy Programme, Chinese Reading Programme and Chinese class on Saturdays, with the aim of enhancing their Chinese language proficiency and helping them establish a firm foundation for Chinese learning.
